Long Distance Cycle Routes

Cycling in SuffolkThere are a number of long distance cycle routes in Suffolk.

In the west of the county there is the Jockey's Trail, a 28 mile route with 2 shorter loops of 6 miles, starting at Newmarket. The Miller's Trail is a 23 mile trail starting at Ixworth, 6 miles north of Bury St Edmunds, taking in windmills, a war memorial and a vineyard.

The Suffolk Coastal Cycle Route is a circular signed route from Felixstowe to Dunwich on quiet roads along the coast before looping inland via the market towns of Framlingham and Woodbridge. There are many opportunities for detours and short cuts, including off-road routes in three forests. Much of the route lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The Heart of Suffolk Cycle Route has been created for those who enjoy the pleasure of cycling in the countryside. The route uses mostly quiet lanes along its 80 mile (125 km) length and is signed in both directions, ideal for someone who simply wants a few hours of casual cycling, or a long distance cyclist wanting to explore the Suffolk countryside. For a free copy of the Heart of Suffolk Cycle Route contact discoversuffolk@suffolk.gov.uk

The South Suffolk Cycle Route also uses quiet lanes and a guide can be obtained from the Sudbury Tourist Information Centre, Town Hall, Market Hill, Sudbury CO10 1TL. Email: sudburytic@babergh.gov.uk or telephone 01787 881320. The guide costs just £1.40 incl P&P.

If you prefer an adrenalin rush, as you negotiate trails amongst majestic pine trees with nothing but the sound of the wind in your hair then go for a complete off-road experience by tackling forest cycling trails. Forest cycling is great for all the family and available in Thetford and Rendlesham Forest and Tunstall Woods
