There are a number of signed leisure cycle routes in Suffolk. The King's Forest Rides are 2 circular routes, mostly off-road, in a very special area with acres of trees, sweeping heathland and wide open skies. The routes start at West Stow Country Park with a cycle link from Bury St Edmunds also described. The Newmarket Rides are a series of 3 circuits between Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds around the villages of Moulton, Gazeley and Barrow on quiet lanes and off-road tracks. The Suffolk Coastal Cycle Route is a circular signed route from Felixstowe to Dunwich on quiet roads along the coast before looping inland via the market towns of Framlingham and Woodbridge. The full route is 88 miles (142 km) long, ideal for weekend tours, and there are many opportunities for detours and short cuts to make day rides, including off-road tracks in three forests. Much of the route lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A fully revised and updated (Autumn 2009) route pack includes maps based on Ordnance Survey ‘Landranger’ series and 3 forest maps based on the ‘Explorer’ series. There is useful information about places of interest along the way plus accommodation and campsite listings. The pack is just £4.99 from Tourist Information Centres in the area or by post from The Suffolk Coast and Heaths Unit, Dock Lane, Melton, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP12 1PE. In the west of the county there is the Jockey's Trail, a 28 mile (45 km) route with 2 shorter loops of 6 miles (10 km), starting at Newmarket. The Miller's Trail is a 23 mile (37 km) trail starting at Ixworth, 6 miles (10 km) north of Bury St Edmunds, taking in windmills, a war memorial and a vineyard. The Heart of Suffolk Cycle Route has been created for those who enjoy the pleasure of cycling in the countryside. The route uses mostly quiet lanes along its 80 mile (125 km) length and is signed in both directions, ideal for someone who simply wants a few hours of casual cycling, or a long distance cyclist wanting to explore the Suffolk countryside.
