Alton Water

Easy Going Trails

Introduction

Alton Water is the largest reservoir in Suffolk, set within 400 acres of peaceful countryside on the Shotley Peninsula. Created in the late 20th century to supply water to the Ipswich area and filled by the River Gipping, the reservoir has since become a haven for wildlife, with habitats ranging from woodland and meadows to dedicated conservation zones and bird hides. Its scenic shoreline and rich biodiversity make it a popular destination for nature lovers throughout the year.

Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities, from gentle lakeside walks and an eight‑mile cycling route to sailing, windsurfing, and fishing. Families can make the most of picnic areas, play spaces, and viewpoints, while the visitor centre offers bike hire, a café, and essential facilities. With year‑round access, varied trails, and excellent opportunities for birdwatching, Alton Water is an ideal spot for outdoor adventures and relaxed days out alike.

Please check Alton Water Website for further visitor information including opening times and facilities.

Easy Access Trail

Sections of the path on the southern side of the lake closest to the visitor centre are more level and firm, offering woodland walking, meadows and views of the reservoir.

Easy Going Trail

The 8 mile full circuit of the lake is a more challenging option since the northern side is more undulating and has a looser surface. This route can get muddy in wet weather and is popular with cyclists.
