Beccles Marsh

Easy Going Trails

Introduction

Beccles Fen is a wide stretch of historic grazing marshes beside the River Waveney, owned and managed by the Fenland Trust. Once part of the Charter lands granted to the people of Beccles by Queen Elizabeth I in 1584, the area is now cared for in partnership with the Broads Authority and the Environment Agency. Its network of hand‑dug dykes, open meadows and riverside views create a classic Broads landscape rich in wildlife, from wetland birds to the vibrant life teeming in the dykes during spring and summer.

Visitors can explore the marshes via the Marsh Trail, a series of gentle walks ranging from one to three hours, or join the long‑distance Angles Way, which passes through Beccles along the river. Shorter nature walks start from The Quay, where you’ll find a café, accessible facilities and riverside seating. Whether you wander beside moored boats, stroll across open meadows or follow tree‑lined paths towards Beccles Common, the area offers peaceful scenery, seasonal colour and plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
