Lackford Lakes

Easy Going Trails

Introduction

Lackford Lakes is a 161‑hectare wildlife haven managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust just outside Bury St Edmunds, where former sand and gravel pits have transformed into a rich landscape of lakes, reedbeds, meadows and woodland. This peaceful reserve offers year‑round encounters with nature—from shimmering kingfishers and summer dragonflies to wintering wildfowl and the vibrant colours of autumn.

Lackford Lakes has a choice of trails that guide you around tranquil waters, through woodland and past wildlife‑rich meadows. Bird hides offer close‑up views of grebes, ducks, warblers and winter visitors. Families can enjoy the outdoor play area, hire binoculars or spotting kits, and relax with refreshments in the café overlooking the bird feeders. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll, a full day of wildlife watching or a peaceful picnic by the water, the reserve offers something special in every season.

Please check Lackford Lakes Suffolk Wildlife Trust Website for further visitor information including opening times and facilities.
