Felixstowe Ferry
Easy GoingTrails
Introduction
Felixstowe Ferry is a small, characterful fishing hamlet two miles northeast of Felixstowe, set where the River Deben meets the North Sea. With its mix of cottages, houseboats, boatyards and a historic pub, the village has a timeless feel and offers sweeping views across the water to Bawdsey Manor. The shoreline is dotted with two imposing Martello Towers—Napoleonic defences built in the early 1800s—adding to the area’s rich sense of history.
Felixstowe Ferry is a wonderful place for coastal walking, with routes that follow the sea wall past colourful beach huts, along the estuary and out towards the peaceful King’s Fleet waterway. Walkers can enjoy wide‑open views, excellent birdwatching and the chance to explore a landscape shaped by centuries of maritime history. For a longer adventure, you can continue to the ferry landing and take the seasonal foot and bicycle ferry across to Bawdsey. With cafés, kiosks and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the scenery, it’s an ideal spot for a relaxed day by the sea.
Easy Access/going trails
The walk can be started from several car parks with accessible parking and toilets. The first part of the walk towards Felixstowe Ferry is the most accessible. Please note that between the Martello Towers the path changes to loose shingle and may be more challenging for wheelchairs.
