Cavenham Heath

Easy Going Trails

Introduction

Cavenham Heath National Nature Reserve lies in the heart of the Brecks near Cavenham, Suffolk, within the wide floodplain of the River Lark. This 204‑hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest is a classic Breckland landscape of dry sandy heath, acid grassland, heather, bracken and sand sedge, interspersed with riverside meadows, woodland and small pockets of fen. Managed by Natural England, the reserve is nationally important for its rare invertebrates, scarce plants and specialist heathland wildlife, including breeding stone‑curlew, nightjar and woodlark.

Cavenham Heath is a superb place for peaceful, nature‑rich walking, with open access across much of the reserve and wide views over its sweeping heathland. As you explore, you may spot butterflies, hear woodlark singing, or catch sight of adders basking on warm spring days—so dogs should be kept on a lead between March and October. Riverside paths along the Lark offer a change of scenery, with kingfisher, grey wagtail and nightingale often seen or heard. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or a longer wander through the Brecks, Cavenham Heath offers a tranquil and rewarding walking experience.

Please check Cavenham Parish Website for more information before visiting.
