Knettishall Heath Country Park
Easy Going Trails
Introduction
Knettishall Heath sits on the edge of the Little Ouse valley near Thetford , offering 175 hectares of ancient lowland heath, grassland and woodland. This remarkable landscape has changed little since the Anglo‑Saxon age and forms part of the wider Brecks, an area known for its nationally rare wildlife and distinctive ‘Breckland stripes’ created at the end of the last Ice Age. With its mix of sandy and chalky soils, Bronze Age burial mounds, historic rabbit warrens and patterned ground, the heath gives visitors a rare glimpse into thousands of years of natural and human history.
Knettishall Heath is a fantastic place to explore on foot, with waymarked trails that guide you through open heath, riverside meadows and peaceful woodland. It’s also the meeting point of four long‑distance routes—including the Angles Way and Peddars Way—making it ideal for both gentle strolls and more ambitious walks. Along the way you may spot Exmoor ponies grazing, discover ancient archaeological features, or simply enjoy a picnic in one of the designated areas. With toilets, baby‑changing facilities and an outdoor play area on site, it’s an inviting spot for walkers of all ages to enjoy the Brecks throughout the year.
Please check Knettihall Suffolk Wildlife Trust Website for further visitor information including opening times and facilities.
