Rendlesham Forest
Easy Going Trails
Introduction
Rendlesham Forest sits within the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering a vast landscape of coniferous woodland, broadleaved belts, heathland and wetland. Located near Tangham, it forms part of the wider Sandlings Forest—an important Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its rare birdlife, including nightjars and woodlarks. With its mix of habitats, family‑friendly facilities, and the newly opened Rendlesham Forest Café, the forest has become a much‑loved destination for visitors looking to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re here for a gentle stroll, a day out with the kids, or simply to soak up the tranquillity of the trees, Rendlesham offers a welcoming gateway into one of Suffolk’s most distinctive landscapes.
Walking at Rendlesham Forest gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, with three circular trails to choose from—including an accessible route and the famous UFO Trail, which uncovers the story behind the 1980 sighting that put the forest on the map. Families can hunt for the giant nightjar sculpture or discover carved woodland animals in Tangham Wood, while cyclists can enjoy everything from beginner‑friendly forest tracks to the more challenging bike park. With large picnic areas, play spaces, horse‑riding routes and plenty of quiet corners to wander, Rendlesham is a place where you can make a day of it—whether you’re building confidence on a bike, exploring the Sandlings’ unique wildlife, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk beneath the pines.
Please check Rendlesham Forestry England Website for further visitor information including opening times and facilities.
