Introduction

Santon Downham is a peaceful village tucked within the heart of Thetford Forest, right on the Suffolk–Norfolk border beside a sweeping bend of the River Little Ouse. With its forestry heritage, charming rural character and easy access to Brandon and Thetford, it’s an inviting starting point for exploring the Breckland landscape. Much of the surrounding area forms part of the Little Ouse Valley Forest Nature Reserve, recognised for its rich wildlife and historic significance. St Helen’s Picnic Site—set beside the river and itself a Scheduled Monument—provides a scenic and convenient base for visitors looking to enjoy the tranquillity of this unique corner of East Anglia.

From St Helen’s Picnic Site, walkers can set out along riverside paths, forest tracks and quiet trails that reveal the area’s varied habitats and long history. It’s an ideal place for a gentle stroll, wildlife spotting or simply soaking up the calm of the pines and open heath. The riverbank offers beautiful views, and the surrounding woodland is home to a wealth of birds and other wildlife. With its peaceful setting, rich natural beauty and easy-to-follow routes, Santon Downham is a rewarding destination for anyone looking to stretch their legs and enjoy the outdoors.
