Carlton Marshes

Easy Going Trails

Introduction

Carlton Marshes is a spectacular 1,000‑acre nature reserve, managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust, set in the Waveney Valley on the Suffolk–Norfolk border, forming the southern gateway to the Broads National Park. This rich landscape is a patchwork of grazing marsh, lowland fen, peat pools, reedbeds and wildflower meadows, shaped over centuries of traditional management. Home to an incredible 28 species of dragonfly, rare fen plants, water voles, marsh harriers and even the reintroduced fen raft spider, the reserve offers a vibrant snapshot of Broadland wildlife at its best.

Visitors can explore miles of trails and boardwalks, including the wheelchair‑friendly Sprat’s Water and Share Marsh routes. Bird hides, picnic spots, an outdoor play area and a welcoming visitor centre—with café, shop, toilets, baby‑changing facilities and accessible amenities—make it easy to enjoy a full day out. Whether you’re watching bitterns boom in spring, spotting dazzling dragonflies in summer, or discovering wintering wildfowl, Carlton Marshes offers year‑round wildlife experiences for families, walkers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Please check Carlton Marshes Suffolk Wildlife Trust Website for further visitor information including opening times and facilities.
