Dunwich Heath
Easy Going Trails
Introduction
Dunwich Heath sits on the Suffolk coast just south of the village of Dunwich, within the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and beside the renowned RSPB Minsmere reserve. This rare stretch of coastal lowland heath—one of the last surviving fragments of the historic Sandlings—offers sweeping views of purple heather, golden gorse, sandy paths and pockets of woodland. Managed by the National Trust, it’s a haven for wildlife such as Dartford warblers, nightjars, woodlarks, ant‑lions and adders, making it a truly special place to experience nature.
Dunwich Heath is perfect for walkers, with a network of footpaths that guide you through colourful heathland, quiet woodland and down towards the beach. From July to September the landscape bursts into a vibrant patchwork of pink and purple heather, creating one of the most memorable walking experiences on the Suffolk coast. Whether you’re after a gentle family stroll or a longer coastal ramble, you’ll find peaceful routes, wildlife encounters and plenty of places to pause and take in the views. After your walk, the tearoom at Coastguard Cottages offers a warm welcome and a well‑earned treat.
Please check Dunwich National Trust Website for further visitor information including opening times and facilities.
